Personality & Traits
General Overview | Duncan is a stern, taciturn man when on duty. No matter what task he is assigned, he gets the job done. Until he became a husband and father, when off duty he was a total prankster and could usually be found involved in practical jokes on his fellow Marines. In the Marines he was known as the "Guerilla Terrorist" to the senior officers, as his pranks were legendary. Now when off duty he is usually spending time with his son Owen, who he tends to be very protective of. While he misses his wife he is also starting to consider dating again, as being a single father can be very stressful and he hates seeing his son with no mother figure.
Strengths & Weaknesses | +Has carried his Marine work ethic over to his new assignment as a Starfleet Security/Tactical officer. +Is a good judge of character and can smell a rat miles away +Knows how to work well with others -Has a slow but explosive temper and woe to anyone who sets him off. |
|
Ambitions | To be a good Starfleet Officer and father. Hopes to retire to a new colony on the frontier and spoil his grandchildren one day.
Hobbies & Interests | Klingon Mok'Bara, Krav Maga, The Lake Ocheecobee Sailing program on the holodeck. |
Personal History | Duncan Heyward was born on Earth to then Marine Captain John Heyward and his wife Anne-Marie. His mother, a fan of classic literature, named all three of her children after characters from her favorite novel, the Last of the Mohicans. It was a foregone conclusion that one day Duncan would become a Marine officer. When he was 17, Duncan and his father went to the nearest Marine Recruiter's office and the Colonel signed the release forms for Duncan to enlist. Duncan, having been prepared by his father practically since birth, excelled in Boot Camp and was meritoriously promoted to Lance Corporal upon graduating from the School of Infantry. He immediately applied for the elite Orbital Drop Incursion Regiment, nicknamed "The Archangels". These Marines did not transport into combat, but rather jumped in from low orbit. This was a highly dangerous unit to be a part of, with an attrition rate of 22%. However, Duncan wanted to be the best. He passed selection and attended Jump School, earning his wings and was assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Orbital Drop Regiment, as a designated marksman. After several years, he was recommended for Officers' Candidate School by his CO, and was sent to Haskins' Planet to attend. Upon completion he was assigned to the same regiment's 2nd Battalion as scout platoon leader in the battalion's headquarters company. Mere weeks after he was promoted to First Lieutenant, the Dominion War began, and the Archangels were deployed to the front lines. Duncan's first jump resulted in heavy casualties in his company, and as one of a handful of surviving officers he assumed command of the company until they were relieved weeks later. This drop earned him the Silver Star with a "V" device for valor. The Archangels were withdrawn from the front for three months to rest and reconstitute the regiment. Then they were redeployed to a mining world called Sheol on the Federation frontier. He had been promoted to Captain by then due to the lack of experienced officers after the previous drop. Sheol would soon become one of the worst and hardest fights the regiment had ever participated in, eventually becoming compared to such historic battles as Tarawa or Belleau Wood in Marine lore. The task force assigned to protect the planet was forced to retreat, leaving the regiment on the ground with no orbital support. But the Marines of the First Regiment would not go down without a fight, and despite the high casualty rate they held their ground until a strike force led by Admiral William Jessup broke through Dominion lines and relieved the beleaguered world. The regiment, now down to a reduced battalion in number, was returned to its home world of New Quebec. After reviewing the combat data, SFMC command decided to disband and rebuilt the unit from scratch. Unfortunately Duncan was reassigned to the 2nd MarDiv on Holland's World and remained there until the war ended. While stationed there he met and eventually married a Bajoran medical officer named Tora Malina. They remained on Holland's World for six years, during which Malina gave birth to a son, Owen. Malina was assigned to Starbase 392 on the Romulan Neutral Zone, which had a Marine Detachment Duncan could join. So they transferred. They remained there until Malina's death in a freak accident five years later. Realizing that he would have to give up custody of his son, Duncan resigned from the Marines and applied to Starfleet Academy, despite offers from his mother and older sister, herself a Marine officer, to take the boy in until Duncan had enough rank to have dependents assigned. He was admitted and chose to go into Security and Tactical. His status as a former Marine officer saw him graduate with the rank of Lieutenant, the equivalent of a Marine Captain, and he applied to the USS Kensington, the very flagship of the strike force that had relieved the Archangels from Sheol all those years before. He was the Assistant Chief Security/Tactical officer until Captain Lee felt he had enough seasoning to be promoted the the Chief position. Duncan and Owen remained aboard the Kensington until the aging vessel, an Excelsior Class refit, was sent to the Startleet Fleet Reserve facility to be decommissioned and scrapped. Duncan and his son, looking for a new home, applied to the USS Endurance, a Miranda class starship. They are currently awaiting reassignment. |

In the six years he has been assigned to my battalion he has shown exemplary leadership skills as well as maintained superior ratings in virtually all areas of specialty. Sergeant Heyward is probably one of my best junior Non-Commissioned officers and it will be a shame to lose him in that capacity. However, I believe he upholds the finest values and traditions of the Starfleet Marines and I enthusiastically endorse him becoming an officer. SIGNED: Marachuk, John J. SIGNED, Heyward, Duncan, CPT, SFMC MARINE DETACHMENT, STARBASE 392 STARFLEET ACADEMY APPLICATION # 58796328 SUBJECT: HEYWARD, DUNCAN TRANSCRIPT OF APPLICATION HEARING I have reviewed the application of one Duncan Heyward, and I must say at first I was confused. Why would a Marine officer give up his rank and career to apply for the Academy? He has to know he'd be having to start over here. But then I looked over his service record and came to conclude he has done what he did for the good of his son. He has already arranged for his son to be placed in temporary custody of his elder sister who is currently posted at Starfleet Command, Marine HQ, right here in San Francisco. Without reservation I endorse this application on the grounds that this young man will make a fine addition to Starfleet. SIGNED, Ch'Rek, Captain, Academy Admission Board |
