Personality & Traits
General Overview | At first appearance, Nyx appears to be a stuck up prig that cares only about herself. While often she'll act that way, she had more of a heart than she actively shows initially. Underneath her haughty looks is someone who isn't quite as confident in herself as she wants everyone to think she is. Getting past her armor to the woman underneath can be a challenge, but getting to the sweetheart underneath is worth the effort. Nyx, despite being full-blooded Betazoid, has no telepathic ability and her empathic ability isn't very strong. |

Personal History | June First, 2364 was a day that was celebrated by everyone in the Valentine family on Betazed: A girl was born. That meant that Minerva Valentine of the Twelfth House of Betazed, Holder of the Bow of Raxzha only had fourteen more years until she bequeathed it to her new daughter: Nyx. Being the daughter of an influential house, Nyx was raised like a princess, nothing was denied to her and she was absolutely spoiled as she grew up. Raxzha Valentine (pronounced Veil-en-teen) was a hero of Old Betazed, a warrior of renown before the time of peace that eventually came to be. Since her time, however, her Bow, which glows under the telepathic contact of the user, has only been passed down from daughter to daughter upon their attainment of their training and the age of fifteen. There have been times that it has skipped a generation when only boys have been born, but one of the precepts of the House is that husbands change THEIR name to Valentine rather than the Holder of the Bow altering their last names. By the time she was fourteen, many things were known about Nyx. She was turning into a stunning beauty, she was rather good at handling a sword and was a dead-shot archer, along with being the most popular girl at her school. Then everything changed when her Great Grandmother Sietra came to visit. Nyx's greatest weakness was proven after she came to her Great Grandmother, dressed to the T in the armor that had been made for her. When Sietra attempted to talk to her through telepathy, there was no answer. In fact, Nyx couldn't even hear her. Then, Sietra dismissed her, telling Minerva 'This one is broken, make another.' That changed much in Nyx's life, because her father had bought into the entire tradition by this point and he began to ignore her most of the time, while her mother would do so around her own mother and grandmother, but sympathized with Nyx whenever they were out of sight. Shortly after her fifteenth birthday, her father asked her point blank when she was going to move out, only relenting after her mother started yelling at him. But it was a wake-up call to Nyx and she began to plan out how she was going to leave her home and make her own way. With permission from both of her parents, her mother having recently given birth to yet another brother, Xaveri, Nyx left home to join Starfleet, her aptitude tests pointing her in the direction of being an engineer. At the Academy on Betazed, Nyx kept up her appearances, her popularity still rising to the top of her fellow cadets, but took a focus more along the lines of programming with an emphasis on holographics. Her boast that she graduated Number One in looks was balanced out by her actual graduation fifty-sixth out of over two hundred cadets in her graduating class, hardly a super-auspicious outcome. She was 21 when she went back home after her graduation, only to have her father ignore her presence with his yet another new son, Letran. It was here that her mother conspired to give Nyx a departing gift: The Bow of Raxzha itself, with the ceremonial armor that had been made for Nyx when she was younger and refitted over the years. The final words of her mother when she departed: 'I will always love you, Nyxie, no matter what the old biddy says.' Her first assignment out of the Academy was to the Centaur-class USS Hesperia, which was assigned to patrol the Romulan Neutral Zone, where very little was occurring, giving Nyx a chance to dig deep into her new profession, rapidly finding herself less of the physical engineer than the intellectual type. With the support and assistance of her Chief, Lieutenant Annabelle Riley, she decided that she'd become more of a specialist when working with holographics. By the time she was sent on to her next assignment, she'd made promotion to a Junior Grade Lieutenant and had designed (but not yet implemented) a new status board for Hesperia that could revolutionize damage control. She took this knowledge, as well as eight bags of personal gear with her to the Akira-class USS Harpy, introducing herself to her new Chief Engineer, Lieutenant Bradley Mariska, and immediately gaining disfavor due to her form of dress, which was rather informal. The initial distrust delayed his acceptance of her new idea for several months, but his stony-faced disregard for her cracked after she finally managed to get a display example put together when she wasn't being overloaded with maintenance duties and virtually everything that wasn't what she'd wanted to have as a specialty. While the Harpy kept responding to provocations by a splinter faction of a Klingon House, Bradley warmed up to Nyx and eventually turned into a supporter and pinned on her Lieutenant's pips the day before her next transfer, this time to the Sovereign-class USS Hyperion as her Assistant Chief Engineer. This is where things really changed for Nyx and her now fourteen bags of personal gear, because she had a small stateroom to herself on the large ship, as well as far more responsibility than she'd had before. Hyperion was sent on far more diverse missions than her previous assignments, including several diplomatic engagements where her tendency to know how to dress properly in civilian clothes and her general photogenic nature actually were a boon to the ship. In 2394, on one such diplomatic mission to Drussel, on the southern border of the Federation, she was gifted a pet by one of their nobles, a Drussellian Drakeling, a small flying lizard that resembled a dragon from Earth's legends, but with a length of 45 centimeters (including the tail) and a wingspan of roughly 60 centimeters. She quickly found out that the little creature loved shiny things and could breath a few puffs of flame every day through a pair of glands that secreted different liquids that combusted when combined. With her new pet named Grizardel, nicknamed Gigi, which remained with her all the time at the blessing of her Chief, Commander Genesis Halloran, Nyx excelled at her work, happy with where life had taken her by this point. Genesis had even allowed her to dress the way she wanted to, which would have caused a scandal on most ships and threatened to on the Hyperion. Rapidly becoming too senior to remain an Assistant Chief, Nyx, now 31 years old, was reassigned to the Nebula-class USS Endurance, this time weighed down with eighteen bags of personal gear, as her Chief Engineer. |
