The Fighter Wing CVW-79, monikered “Night Hawks”, is a fixed-wing attack fighter group. It falls under the Starfighter Corps, one of Starfleet’s Unified Commands.

The Fighter Wing is currently embarked aboard the Cruiser/Carrier USS Endurance. It's major area of responsibility resides along, and within the Tri-border Region of the Klingon-Romulan-Federation borders.

CVW-79 currently consists of four squadrons. Three attack squadrons of twelve craft each, and one support squadron of six craft.

Gryphon class Multi Role Fighter

Crew: 2 abreast
Max velocity: Warp 3, for 2 hours
Weapons:
  • Forward pulse phaser cannon
  • Forward micro torpedo launcher
  • Rear micro torpedo launcher
  • full circle turret pulse phaser cannon
  • 40 Mk VI warhead micro torpedoes

The Gryphon is a solid all-rounder. While it may not excell at anything, it is competent at most things.

The side-by-side cockpit design is much more reminiscent of a shuttle or runabout, albeit on a smaller scale. There is no rear compartment, instead, the after portion of the craft houses the power plant, and propulsion system, including the micro Warp Core.

The Duranium/Titanium hull has an ablative armour layer, to help off-set the limited shielding system.

Nova Flyer Mk II class Interceptor

Crew: 1
Max Velocity: Warp 6, for 4 hours
Weapons:
  • Forward twin pulse phaser cannons
  • Forward micro torpedo launcher
  • 30 Mk VIII Warhead micro torpedoes

The Nova Flyer is built on the remise of pouncing on an enemy, hitting hard, and getting away from any returning fire.

The sub-light impulse engines, and thruster control systems allow the Nova Flyer to summersault around any other craft.

The robust shields provide for greater deflection of weapons fire, and allow a less armoured hull. This helps add to the Nova Flyer’s abilities in atmospheres, as the lower physical mass improves performance.

Peregrine class Fast Attack Fighter

Crew: 2 inline
Max velocity: Warp 3.8 for 4 hours
Weapons:
  • Forward twin pulse phaser cannons
  • Forward micro torpedo launcher
  • Two turret pulse phaser cannons

The Perigrine fighter felt like a design mistake. While the Warp and thruster control systems were average, the sub-light impulse engines allowed for an almost 0.9c cruising speed.

While nowhere near as agile as other fighters, the Perigrine is able to launch from a carrier, and reach weapons range before the enemy has come close to the carrier.

The two independently targetable turrets help offset the limited maneuverability, and allow for continued weapons fire while the forward weapons are brought on target.
