New Assignment

Posted on Fri Jul 23rd, 2021 @ 9:54pm by Lieutenant Tyler Elbrun DSci & Captain Temperance Harding & Lieutenant Commander Andromeda Lightfeather

Mission: Mission 0: Have Wings, Will Fly
Location: Shuttlebay, Bridge and Captain's Ready Room

As Tyler Elbrun's shuttle made its final approach to the USS Endurance, the pilot hailed the ship and informed them that he was ferrying yet another new officer having been assigned to the Nebula-class starship and asked for permission to dock. When permission had been granted, Lieutenant, JG Ethan Hawksley took the shuttle into the shuttlebay as allowed with the skill only a person born to fly could.

Lieutenant Tyler Elbrun, DSci, having just received his Doctorate in Quantum Mechanics, left the shuttlecraft in short order, asked the deck officer where he might find the Captain and Executive Officer. "I would assume they're on the bridge, sir," Chief Thomas Barnes said.

"Thank you, Chief...?"

"Barnes, Thomas Barnes, Lieutenant, sir," the senior non-com of the flight deck said.

"Thank you, Chief Barnes, Thomas Barnes. I think I can take it from here. I appreciate your help," Tyler said before taking his leave of the young man. Once out into the corridor, Lieutenant Elbrun made his way up to the bridge and upon reaching his destination, he entered and asked the first officer he saw where he might find the CO and/or XO.

Commander Lightfeather was standing watch on the bridge of a starship that was still docked when the noise of the lift doors opening made her look over and a Lieutenant in blue undershirt stepped out onto the bridge, having nothing else to do she turned fully to face him "Hello Lieutenant, what can I do you for?" Lightfeather said walking over to him.

"I am Lieutenant Tyler Elbrun and I have just been assigned to your ship to fill your vacant Chief Science Officer position, Commander. I have been looking forward to arriving here because I have never served on a Nebula-class ship before," Elbrun said. "And yes before you ask, I am from thatfamily."

Looking at the new science officer quizzically "Sorry Lieutenant, never heard of that family name before, still nice to meet you and welcome aboard the Endurance, you have your transfer Padd on you?" Lightfeather asked.

"My apologies, Commander," Elbrun said and then said, "Yes, ma'am, here you go," and he handed his transfer orders to a person that he could only assume was the XO due to the rank. "Is the Captain around possibly, Commander? Only curious."

"yes she is around," Andi said and looked at the Padd "in response to your wondering Lieutenant, I see the curiousness on your face, I am the ships new First Officer, welcome to the Endurance, you will undoubtedly see the Captain at some point," Lightfeather said then looked up as the Captain entered the bridge "ah Captain, this is our new Chief Science Officer, Lieutenant Tyler Elbrun, Lieutenant Elbrun please meet Captain Temperance Harding," Andi said introducing the Captain.

"Captain, it's a pleasure to meet you," Tyler said extending his hand in greeting.

Taking the man's hand, Temperance offered a warm smile. "Good to have a Scientist on board. "Come." She waved the man towards her ready room. "Bridge is yours, XO."

"After you, Captain," Tyler said and followed his new CO into her office.

[Captain's Ready Room]

Entering the office, Temperance set a PADD down, as she moved around the desk. "Would you care for a drink, Lieutenant?"

"Actually, a medium hot chocolate with Irish Creme in it, if you don't mind, please," Lieutenant Elbrun said softly. He could feel the trepidation in the bridge crew especially the Exec. So, he strengthened his mental shields as best he could. But, he knew he would have to see the Chief Medical Officer STAT.

With the Captain speaking to the new Science officer Andi paced the bridge checking the status she went to the tactical station and put it through a low-level diagnostic then after setting it up to send it to the screen on her chair arm she returned to her First Officers seat. The ship was currently stationary as the final crew were arriving.

Ordering the drink, and one for herself, Temperance set both on the desk as she sat. "I can't say I've ever served alongside a Betazoid before." She confessed honestly. "I have heard many stories about your species."

"Really? You've never had a Betazoid Counselor? Somehow, I find that hard to believe, not that I'm calling you a liar by any means. But, please tell me about some of the stories you've heard so I can put fact to fiction," as he sat down. "You're free to ask me anything but I warn you to be prepared for an honest answer because I can be blunt. I'm just saying, Captain."

"Not every counsellor is Betazoid, Lieutenant," Temperance remembered a Vulcan that she had seen for a few weeks after her accident. That had been... something. "The stories I have heard are that you read minds. Can pull a thought, a feeling." She was uncomfortable with the idea. If an enemy could turn a Betazoid, how many classified secrets would be at risk?

"You are correct there, Captain. But, I would wager that the number of Betazoid counsellors would shock you. Or perhaps not, as you strike me as someone who is not easily surprised. "Yes, we are a race of telepaths or mind-readers if you prefer the archaic term. As for pulling thoughts and emotions; if you mean by accident, most of that happens with one of us whose telepathy has just emerged or when they aren't members of Starfleet.

"Starfleet has a telepathy regulation for telepaths that states that we will not enter another individuals' mind without their express consent. As for me, my telepathy isn't fully under my control which is why I take medication to help mine not get out of my grasp. While it doesn't hamper my abilities totally, it does help my ability to reign them in. Are those the answers you were looking for, Captain?"

"That is good to know, Lieutenant." Temperance activated her console, interested in the official word on this man. "I see your Degree is in Quantum Mechanics, quite a heady field." She had taken the basics of physics classes at the Academy, though it had always been far beyond her grasp.

"Yes ma'am, it was a rather difficult subject to grasp but I was able to get through it. But, I also have Masters in Reverse Genetics, which has served me well on other assignments where I was able to work with the Medical Staff. Helping in other departments has always made me feel better and more in control of myself," Elbrun said.

"I do like cross-compatibility in my departments, it allows for flexibility, and a backstop, if the need arises. Tell me, Lieutenant, was there anything you needed or wanted to know about the role?"

"Not really, I think I know pretty much everything about being a Chief Science Officer, that I need to know. I've been a Chief Science Officer before and have been left in charge of the department, as well. I understand the necessary basics of the role. I've taken several command courses in the Academy so I'm all up on the command aspects of the job, Captain," Elbrun said. "I'm sorry if I've offended you in any way but I believe in being honest, sometimes brutally so."

Temperance gave the man a smile. "All good, Lieutenant. Welcome aboard."

"Thank you, Captain. Would you prefer me to take me station on the bridge or did you need me somewhere else right now?"

[Bridge]

All was going smoothly on the bridge, Andi still could not bring herself to sit in the centre seat, she looked around the bridge which was still filling up with the crew, currently, they were still docked so there was not much for her to do.
