Check Up

Duncan walked into Sickbay, Owen in tow. He had picked Owen up from school and brought him in for his first checkup with the ship's Medical Officer. Normally the checkup would be done before he reported for duty, but he'd arrived at a particularly busy moment so he'd switched things around a bit. He looked around the room and noticed the glass-walled alcove that served as the CMO's office. He walked to the door and knocked lightly on the glass.

"Hi. Sorry to bother you, Doctor, but we're here for my son's checkup? " he asked politely.

"Oh hello" Doctor Ross smiled as she looked up and stood from her desk, her sourthern accent in full effect. "Let's get our big guy on a bio bed" Hope said with a smile and gave a nod to dad. "My names Doctor Ross, but you can call me Hope" she was speaking to the young boy.

"I'm Owen. " the boy said, smiling. The ridges on his nose wrinkled a bit when he did so. He leaned over to his father and whispered, " She's pretty." Duncan blushed and shook his head at the boy's antics.

Hope blushed slightly and smiled at Owen "well that's very kind of you Owen and you are?" she looked over at the Lieutenant who brought the boy in.

"Lieutenant Heyward, ma'am. Duncan. I'm the new Chief of Security. " Duncan replied.

"Pleasure to meet you Lieutenant" Hope gave a nod and turned her attention back to Owen. "So Owen" she smiled at the kiddo "anything ouchy or bothering you?"

"No ma'am. " he said, smiling at her. Duncan nodded. The boy wasn't shy about telling him if something was bothering him.

"Well that's great news" Hope was very proud of her bed side manor and thought Owen was a little cutie. Doctor Ross retrieved a tricorder and pulled the probe from the back. "Owen" she smiled again and held out the tool in front of him "do you know what this is?"

"It's a tricorder. People use it to scan things. " he said.

"Good job buddy" she smiled at Owen and then at Duncan. "May I take some medical scans of you?" Hope asked Owen before going forward.

"Yes ma'am. " he said. He watched the scanner as she waved it over him, looking at her tricorder.

Hope kept an eye on her device and made one quick look up at Owen with a soft smile on her face. He was a well behaved boy and cute as a button.

"So how is he, Doctor? " he asked once she had run her scans.

"Everything checks out" she smiled at Owen and then looked back to Lieutenant Heyward. "Healthy as an ox" Hope said with a smile on her face, it was an expression she had heard her dad say one time and she sometimes let it slip out. She singed off on Owen's check up on a PADD she picked up and turned her attention to Duncan "Might as well get yours taken care of" she suggested.

"Yes ma'am. " said Duncan, hopping onto the biobed with Owen.

"So Doctor, how long have you been on board, if you don't mind me asking? " he asked.

"Just a few days" she answered Duncan while starting his physical. "What about you two" she asked looking up from the tricorder, but glancing down every so often as the scans continued.

"We just reported aboard as well. How are you liking the ship? Owen's really excited about her. " said Duncan.

"What's not to love, right big guy?" she smiled at Owen. "I'm pretty well staffed and have a pretty state of the art medical bay." Doctor Ross was very happy with both her staff and the space that was provided for the medical bay and the auxiliary areas and labs were more then adequate.

"So far I'm with you. Granted I have a lot of raw recruits fresh out of training, but my Assistant Chief of Security and the Chief Master-at-Arms are old hands in Starfleet so I have at least two people to help me train them. " said Duncan.

He felt a quick pop in his ribs. He turned to look at Owen, who had elbowed him and was looking at him expectantly.

"Knock it off. " he warned.

"Ask her. " said Owen. Duncan sighed and shook his head, chuckling.

"Do you think you'd like to join us for dinner sometime? " he asked.

Hope gave a polite smile "you two are precious and I don't see anything wrong with dinner sometime." Owen was the cutest little thing and Duncan was attractive and physically fit, which she found rather nice. Hope just wasn't sure if she was ready for anything other then friends, but she had an open mind if something happened it happened. "What did you have in mind?" she looked at Duncan with a flirty smile "dinner I mean" she blinked a few times.

"Nothing fancy. The ship's lounge, after we're off duty. I want Owen to eat real food as much as possible. " he said. Owen smiled up at her, the nose ridges dimpling again.

"Sounds like a plan" Hope gave Duncan a sweet smile and offered a hand for a high five to the boss man "see you there cutie" she assured Owen.

"Yes ma'am. " Owen said. Duncan couldn't help but grin. The kid was adorable and he knew it. He sometimes used it to get his way.

"We'll see you there. " Duncan said to Hope. He liked the way she interacted with his son, and he knew the boy liked her just by how he had immediately taken to her and spoken. Duncan had been out of the dating world for a long time now. She was definitely attractive, with beautiful eyes and a gorgeous smile. He didn't know where this would lead, but at the very least he had made a new friend.

"Well" she smiled "you are clear for duty" Hope shut the tricorder and finished her exam. She would make notes on each medical file later. "All done big guy" she gave Owen a thumbs up.

"Thank you, Doctor Hope. " said Owen. Duncan nodded in agreement.

"We'll see you tonight. " he added.
